West Intermediate Football Championship

Shamrocks 0-10, Nire 1-7.

Shamrocks Footballers marked their return to Intermediate ranks with a come from behind draw with the Nire in Cappoquin last Saturday. Playing with the stiff breeze in the first half we traded points with the Nire, Kieran Crawford and Billy Hynes getting the early scores to lead 2-1. The Nire then struck for four points and a goal in a purple patch that saw them reach half time leading 1-5 to 3 points, our other point coming from the boot of Colm Roche. So we started into the 2nd half with a five point deficit facing a breeze. We started well and got the first 2 scores from Billy and Shane Roche which were cancelled out by the Nire. So despite having a lot of possession we found ourselves five points down with about 15 minutes left. In fairness the lads didn’t panic and one by one we clawed our way back with pointed frees from Billy, and an excellent point from Chris Murphy. With time up we launched one last attack up the field from our back line and that man again Billy Hynes fittingly drove the equaliser over the bar to ensure our debut back at Intermediate level didn’t end in defeat. This was a spirited display considering our lads hadn’t played any football since the Munster Junior tie against Castlemahon last October. We have a bye next weekend and our next match is against Emmets in two weeks.
