Western Intermediate Football Championship

Shamrocks Vs Colligan Saturday 30th September at 3pm in Ballysaggart

Shamrocks 0-7, Colligan Emmets 3-3.

Shamrocks 2nd round match in the Western Intermediate Football Championship played in a wet and windy Ballysaggart last Saturday ended in a five point defeat and puts us in a relegation battle. Shamrocks were slow to get going and found themselves 1-1 down after 10 minutes after conceding what can only be described as an inexplicable penalty. Billy Hynes got got us off the mark with a point but Colligan replied which left the score 1-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. Shamrocks hauled themselves back into the game then and fired over 4 points in a row from Kieran Crawford, Shane Roche and two from Billy to leave the half time score 0-5 to 1-3.

Despite getting the first score of the 2nd half from Billy to level the score, once again we found ourselves facing another penalty which was certainly soft. We were still reeling from that when Colligan raced through the field and scored a well taken goal to leave us 6 points behind which was not a true reflection of the game. Worse was to follow with Stevie Lucey getting his marching orders following a melee that developed after Shane Roche was fouled and hit on the ground with no free being awarded. Try as we might we were unable to peg the deficit back with only one point from Billy to show for our efforts. Undoubtedly the penalties and sending off had a profound effect on the game, but we weren’t at our best going forward and made too many handling errors. So we must dust ourselves down and face a relegation battle in a fortnight’s time.

Panel; Bernie Kelleher, Jason Ahearne, Mike O’Neill, Stephen Roche, Adam Crawford, Shane Roche (0-1), Eoghan Lenehan, Colm Roche, Stevie Lucey, Tom Dalton, Kieran Crawford (0-1), Padraig Hynes, Edward Hynes, Billy Hynes (0-5), Liam Motherway, Tommy O Donovan, Padraig Roche, Ciarán Lenehan, Ciarán Hunt, Shane Harnedy, Adam McSweeney, Kelvyn O Farrell.
