PIHC, Shamrocks 1-19, Ballyduff Lower 0-13. 04/08/2023.
Shamrocks Intermediate hurlers won their second round tie in the Premier
Intermediate Hurling Championship at a soggy Stradbally last Friday night when
they turned a 3 point lead at half time into a 9 point victory over Ballyduff Lower
thanks to a much improved second half display. The sides traded early points with
two frees from the stick of Padraig Hynes keeping us level before two scores from
play by captain Edward Lonergan and Padraig gave us an early lead. The Eastern
side struck 3 points in a row to go ahead, but Shamrocks then hit 5 points in a row
in a purple spell to go 4 ahead, Padraig with 3 frees, and Colm Roche with a brace,
and Billy Hynes finished off our first half scoring to leave the score 0-10 to 0-7.
Playing with the stiffening wind we started the second half in excellent fashion
scoring 6 points and conceding 1 before Colm Roche rounded his marker and
buried the ball in the net to give us an 11 point lead. Ballyduff to their credit never
gave up but a few missed opportunities from frees seemed to drain their
confidence. By contrast Padraig Hynes had a superb second half from placed balls
scoring 6 and missing none, great scoring considering the wet conditions. Our half
back line of Sean Meaney, Shane Roche and Adam Crawford were the rock that
foiled the opposition time and again with Pádraig Hynes’ unerring freetaking and
Colm Roche’s scores from play a major contribution. Stephen Roche caught the
eye winning some great ball and passing superbly.
So a much improved performance from the last round with Tramore to come next
Friday evening in Fraher Field where no doubt we will need to improve a little
more to have a chance of winning.
