Intermediate Football Championship Final
Shamrocks brought the Harnedy/O’Neill Cup home with a hard-fought 0-9 to 0-8 victory over Ballinacourty in the Radley Engineering Western Intermediate Football Championship Final at Fraher Field on Friday night. Trailing 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time, Shamrocks battled back, with man of the match Billy Hynes contributing six points from placed balls. His two-point free in the 43rd minute put Shamrocks ahead for the first time, while points from John Paul Lucey, Adam Crawford and Padraig Hynes proved crucial.
Padraig Hynes kicked what proved to be the winning point in the 52nd minute, and Shamrocks held their nerve through a tense finish to secure back-to-back Western titles in different grades following last year’s junior success. Captain Stephen Lucey accepted the cup from Western Board Chairman Pa Lyons, while Billy Hynes received the MOVE Gym man of the match award. The victory leaves Shamrocks one win away from Premier Intermediate football in 2027.
Harnedy/O’Neill Cup
In 1983, Shamrocks GAA presented the O’Neill Harnedy Cup to the Western Board in memory of two players, Ted Harnedy and Dan O’Neill.
Last weekend, we proudly lifted the trophy for the second time, our first success coming in 1987.
What made the occasion all the more special was seeing generations of both the Harnedy and O’Neill families, sharing in the celebration on the pitch as players and among our supporters.
A proud night for both families and everyone involved in Shamrocks. Two former players remembered, and a new generation creating memories to cherish.
