Club Notes: 13th May 2013

Club Lotto.
The numbers drawn in last Saturday night’s lotto draw were 15-22-23-27, and there was no winner. €20 winners were Marian Forbes, Marie Baldwin, Carmel Baldwin, Carmel O’ Farrell, Maggie Walsh. Next week’s jackpot will be €9,250

Intermediate Hurling, Shamrocks 2-15, Brickeys 0-14.
Shamrocks Intermediate hurlers were made to battle all the way in winning this second round tie against Brickey Rangers last Sunday in Lismore. Playing against the very strong wind in the first half, Colm Roche got us off to the best possible start when he fired over two points, but Brickeys then took over, scoring the next seven points before we scored again through Shane Roche. Joe Leahy also pointed to leave the score at the break 0-11 to 0-5. Apart from the fact we were 6 points down, of more concern was the fact we weren’t hurling well allowing Brickeys to dictate the game. It was going to take a huge effort to overturn the men from Bushy Park, but thankfully the goal we needed to give us the necessary kickstart came, once again, from young Colm who finished off good work by Chris Murphy, and with the whole team growing in confidence, we hit over a succession of points to go ahead, and when Shane scored another goal which was set up by his brother, we were home and dry. This was a tough, real championship tie with the result in doubt until the very end, and credit Brickeys who played their part in making this a pulsating tie. The most pleasing aspect of this game from our point of view was how we never gave up and battled our way back into the game, coming from behind to come out on top. We had a lot of leaders throughout the team, but I must pick out Shane Roche who was immense all through the game, winning vital possession and scoring when it was needed most, but everyone played their part, from 1 to 17, including substitutes Padraig Tobin and Ciaran O’ Keeffe. We won’t be in championship action again until after Waterford’s match against Clare on June 2nd, but we will have a league match this Sunday against St. Mary’s in Knockanore, time a little uncertain at the moment. Panel; Liam Murphy, Padraig Ahearne, John O’ Donovan, Brian Harnedy, Jason Ahearne, Eoin Murphy, Stevie Lucey, Tom O’ Donovan, Joe Leahy(0-1), Colm Roche (1-3), Shane Roche (1-9), Adam Crawford, Chris Murphy, Edward Lonergan, Cathal Herlihy, Padraig Tobin (0-1), Ciaran O’ Keeffe (0-1), Keegan O’ Farrell, Sean Murphy, Eamonn Forbes, Liam Dalton, Jamie Murphy, John Baldwin, Mike O’ Neill.

Junior Hurling, Shamrocks 1-12, Cappoquin 1-6.
Shamrocks Junior hurlers recorded a fine win over Cappoquin in the Junior Hurling Championship second round last Friday night in Ballyduff. With a win and a draw so far, we are in a strong position ahead of the next round which won’t take place for a few weeks. I don’t have a report of the game, but I’m told the selectors were happy with the display. Panel; Sean O’ Neill, Eoin Roche, Eamonn Forbes, Mike O’ Neill, Mike Smith, Kieran Murphy, Conor Goulding, Liam Dalton, Diarmuid Ahearne, Tomas O’ Neill, Paddy Smith, Dan O’ Neill, Sean Murphy, Alan Kelly, James Walsh, Pat Murphy, Ritchie Murphy, Tim Lenehan, John A. Kelly.

Sympathies.
Shamrocks C.L.G. would like to offer it’s sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Mike Hannon, former player with Ballyduff Upper, who passed away last Saturday, a man still only in his fifties. Mike would be well remembered by many of the Shamrocks (slightly older) brigade as we were joined with Ballyduff at minor and U-21 for a few years, and would have hurled together many times. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
